More than 80,000 homes were transferred to the association |
The head of the association which took over Glasgow's council houses has conceded that some tenants are feeling let down. Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) took over more than 80,000 former council homes in the spring, promising hundreds of millions of pounds worth of repairs over the coming years.
In a BBC Scotland documentary to be shown on Tuesday, some tenants claim the condition of their houses has continued to deteriorate under the new regime.
GHA chief executive Michael Lennon said he could understand how they must feel.
Stock transfer
He said: "People who have had no repairs to their houses for 10 years - on stock that was built often 40, 50, 60 years ago - it would be a strange thing indeed if they were happy and satisfied now.
"I think, to be frank, there will be whole lots of people with expectations after this stock transfer whom we will to some extent let down for a while."
Two housing officers spoke to the Frontline Scotland programme anonymously.
They warned that promises on maintenence are being broken and rents could be set to rise.
One said: "The tenants have been promised new bathrooms, kitchens and the like. Nothing has happened yet."
Some houses have not been repaired for years |
The other agreed: "That's true. The timetable will probably be a lot slower than they have mentioned up until now.
"It's been a waste of time and money really, to date."
Maria Fyfe, vice chair of the Glasgow Housing Association, said she found these claims "extraordinary".
She said: "For example, in the short time we have been up and running 1,000 homes have got their new kitchens and bathrooms. There has been rewiring and new cladding and so on.
Poor end
"There is a great deal going on in that programme."
"Nobody ever said that the whole programme would be completed six months after we took over the houses."
She said that the 80,000 houses they took over were "at the poor end of the social rented sector" but whose rents were at the "high end".
"We have given guarantees on rents to tenants, which the council was not in a position to do, and we have got this planned programme of carrying out works."
The Frontline Scotland programme Slumming It is transmitted at 2130 BST on Tuesday 21 October
