English football hooligans have been blamed for starting a fight between Scottish and Italian fans ahead of Dundee's Uefa Cup match with Perugia. Police, who joined Dundee officials in Perugia, identified known soccer thugs linked to two Premiership clubs as ringleaders of the disturbance.
A Tayside Police officer told officials the row, in which bottles rained down on fans in the city's main square, involved hooligans linked to Chelsea and Charlton.
A Dundee official said: "We now know for certain that last night's trouble was sparked by English soccer hooligans. Dundee supporters were then caught up in the fight that ensued.
"We're travelling with a senior Tayside Police officer and his assistance proved invaluable.
"He has been able to help identify two of the ringleaders from last night as known hooligans with Chelsea and Charlton."
A number of travelling Dundee supporters were injured in the incident on Tuesday evening.
A group of more than 100 fans were drinking in the town's main square when a fight broke out.
It is understood that eight supporters were treated in hospital, with one man being kept in for observation although his injuries were not said to be serious.
More than 2,000 fans from Dundee travelled to the Umbria region for the second leg of the first round Uefa Cup tie on Wednesday.
Perugia scored the only goal of the game, winning the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
