Police have sealed off the remote cottage |
A police investigation is continuing into why a woman was shot by Scottish police. The 31-year-old was seriously injured after a stand-off with armed officers from Lothian and Borders Police outside a cottage about 15 miles south-west of Edinburgh.
Police refused to comment on claims the woman was brandishing an air pistol.
But the shooting is understood to have happened after the woman ignored repeated requests to put her weapon down.
An investigation team from neighbouring Strathclyde Police, led by Assistant Chief Constable Ricky Gray, is carrying out the inquiry into the shooting.
Mr Gray visited the scene on Sunday afternoon.
Firearms procedure
An armed response team was called to the cottage near the hamlet of Colzium, west of Harperrig Reservoir on Saturday after the woman telephoned the police to tell them she had shot her mother.
Police said the woman - known as Jenny and thought to be from London - was shot in the stomach.
Staff at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary said the woman was in a "comfortable" condition, after undergoing surgery for stomach injuries.
No one else was involved in the incident, the police confirmed.
Police were called to the area on Saturday evening |
A spokesman confirmed the firearms procedure had been established for the incident.
The cottage owner, Tony Carruthers, said the woman was a friend who had been staying at his home.
He was not at the house at the time of the incident but said he had spoken to the police at 1800 BST on Saturday.
"They knew it was just a soft air pistol. They knew there was nobody else there.
"They asked me what cars were there - I told them exactly what cars were there.
"They have to get to the bottom of this."
