Warning over salmon deaths
Hundreds of dead Salmon have been fished from the river
About 100 salmon have died on a Scottish river due to apparent heat exhaustion following the recent hot weather.

Conservation experts are now warning of a disaster at one of Scotland's prime salmon rivers unless urgent action is taken to restore water levels.

Parts of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire have been reduced to little more than a stream by the long dry spell.

Thousands of salmon have become trapped in the lower reaches - and BBC Scotland has learned that 100 have died over the last few days.

Water is taken from the river for use by homes and businesses across the north east.

Pressure on supplies

The Dee Fisheries Board has warned that hundreds more salmon will die unless a hosepipe ban is implemented urgently to help restore water levels.

The organisation said it had warned of a disaster for years. Scottish Water said it was aware of the situation.

The body is already calling on water users not to put undue pressure on supplies.

Salmon angling on the Dee is said to be worth millions of pounds to the area's economy.
