Herbert Lipah, who runs the world's largest lederhosen shop in Munich, came up with idea during a recent beer festival.

Herr Lipah, 55, said he was inundated with requests from men who wanted something to stuff in their socks to make their calves appear more manly.

He told BBC Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme it works just as well for kilts as for leather shorts.

'Too small'

"Some people said to me I have problems with my calves," he explained.

"It came to me that this was a funny and lovely idea, not only for the Bavarians.

"When you try lederhosen and the legs look too small inside the socks, some people said 'No, I can't have lederhosen, it's no good for me'.

"The implants look good, they are funny and all the people around the world love them."

Herr Lipah believes the long-term tradition involved in both the lederhosen and Highland dress markets will mean his invention has legs.
