Nursery nurses are demanding a pay review |
Industrial action by nursery nurses has hit hundreds of parents and children across Scotland as a dispute over pay enters its fourth week. About 2,000 nurses are involved in the latest round of strikes.
Public sector union Unison is carrying out a rolling programme of action as members demand a 4,000 a year pay increase.
The latest disruption affects Glasgow and surrounding authorities, as well as the Highlands and Dumfries and Galloway.
It is increasingly frustrating that Scottish employers seem prepared to accept continuing disruption to young children's education |
Nursery nurses from Glasgow, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and Highland all started two days of strike action on Wednesday.
Unison said rallies were also planned for Motherwell and Glasgow, with nurses lobbying the Highland Council on Thursday.
The union has also announced plans for an all-Scotland day of action on 24 June.
Carol Ball is chair of Unison's Scottish nursery nurse working party and a nurse in Glasgow.
Further action
"It is increasingly frustrating that Scottish employers seem prepared to accept continuing disruption to young children's education rather than making a fair offer to deal with the unfairness of nursery nurses' pay and responsibilities," she said.
The union has warned that without some sign of movement from employers, action will continue across the country backed up by a boycott of additional duties.
The next areas targeted for strikes will be Falkirk, Stirling, Perth and Kinross, Dundee City and Fife on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
