A six-foot long anti-tank rifle has been handed in to police as part of a nationwide firearms amnesty. The weapon, dating from WW1 and capable of piercing armour plating, was surrendered to police in Fife.
It follows the handing in on Tuesday of a Kalashnikov AK47 assault rifle and two sawn-off shotguns to police in Strathclyde.
Fife Police have seized more than 1,500 firearms and an armoury of other weapons and ammunition during the month-long amnesty, which still has just over a week left.
Scotland's police forces have vowed an enforcement crackdown will follow the end of the gun amnesty on 30 April.
'Golden opportunity'
Fife's deputy chief constable, David Mellor, said: "We will then be proactively targeting those who may have chosen to ignore this golden opportunity to rid the streets of potential killers like this potentially-lethal anti-tank weapon.
"It is very important that the momentum of the campaign, a success story already, should not falter.
"Those who continue not to grasp the opportunity they currently have should realise that they might shortly have to face the consequences of their decision."
