The downturn in the North Sea oil and gas industry has meant the loss of almost 300 more jobs in Scotland. Oil services company Weatherford has blamed the uncertain economic climate and the problems with the North Sea industry for its decision to close its plant in Arbroath.
More than 160 jobs will be lost with the closure of the factory which makes a range of equipment for the oil and gas industry.
The company said that a further 35 related posts will go in Aberdeen, but efforts would be made to find alternative jobs for staff affected.
Final decision
The news came as oil giant Shell said that up to 100 posts will go over the next two years in Aberdeen as part of a Europe-wide reorganisation of its exploration business.
A further 200 jobs will be lost at its offices in Lowestoft, Norfolk.
Shell said a final decision on the number of job cuts will be made later this year.
But a spokeswoman confirmed any cuts in Aberdeen are in addition to the 140 staff job losses announced there last month.
On a more positive note, Weatherford is to open a �12m facility in Aberdeen for the manufacture of oil well related equipment.
