Diabetes centre appeal launched
The centre will be at Dundee University
A fundraising campaign has been launched to establish a world class medical research facility in Dundee.

The 17m centre at Dundee University will be used to develop treatments for diabetes and global diseases such as malaria.

About 13m has already been raised to build the new centre, with work due to start later this year.

On Wednesday, an appeal was launched to find the final 4m needed to complete the project.

Saving lives

Dundee-born actor Brian Cox, who most recently starred in the quirky Nicolas Cage film Adaptation, helped launch the campaign.

He has suffered from diabetes for the past four years and has an interest in tropical diseases.

Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing threats to health in the UK, and malaria kills many children in the developing world.

Mr Cox said: "If the new building receives the required funding, the potential for saving lives is nothing short of astounding."

During a previous visit to the university, Mr Cox met Professor Grahame Hardie, whose research led to the development of the drugs the actor takes every day to deal with the effects of his condition.
