Firefighters rally public support
Andy Gilchrist
Firefighters continue to press for better pay
The leader of the Fire Brigades' Union (FBU) has joined a Scottish rally to thank the public for support during the long-running pay dispute.

FBU general secretary Andy Gilchrist joined about 1,000 people on the hour-long march through Dunfermline in Fife.

He later spoke at rally in the town's Pittencrieff Park.

Firefighters and their families marched through the streets of the town to thank members of the public for their continued support.

Pay and conditions

The march was organised by local FBU members who wanted to thank locals for supporting them over the last few months.

Speaking after the march regional FBU chairman Roddy Robertson said: "This march has not only been held to thank locals but to show that this dispute is not over and how we hope to have their continued support.

He added: "We are still in talks over pay and conditions and it is great to have so many people from all walks of life coming here to back us.

"What we have heard today is how FBU members are not prepared to sell the fire service for a pay rise, that will never happen."

Firefighters have held a series of strikes since last November in pursuit of a substantial pay rise.

The union is currently holding talks with the government over pay and conditions in the fire service through the conciliation service Acas.
