Drink-drive rise over holiday weekend
Breathalyser
The holiday period yielded worrying drink-drive results
Fife Police have reported a dramatic increase in the number of people caught drink-driving over the holiday weekend.

Nineteen drivers stopped by officers between Friday night and Monday morning failed a breathalyser test - nearly twice the normal number.

Inspector Bruce Thomson said the figures left the police "severely disappointed".

He said officers were determined to drive home the message that it was foolish and dangerous to drink and drive.

"During the past 12 months we have dedicated time and effort to find out what else could be done to counter this on-going problem and clearly we will still have to look at this even further now," he said.

Police are concerned about the summer period

"Last year we were especially worried that young people in particular were becoming less inclined to think of drink-driving as being socially unacceptable.

"We looked at this area in depth, targeted resources and thankfully appear to have met with considerable success although concerns about the number detected in this age group this weekend will undoubtedly make us look at this area in considerable depth again."

Police in Fife wanted to make roads in the region as safe as possible, Inspector Thomson went on.

"With the advent of summer there will be barbecues, parties and other social events.

"And while drivers must accept their responsibilities and stay within the legal limits, those hosting such events should also think long and hard before putting others at risk through serving overly generous measures, for instance, or tempting someone to have another drink when it is patently unnecessary or avoidable."
