| Thursday, 18 April, 2002, 12:29 GMT 13:29 UK All-clear for water supplies ![]() Residents have been warned not to drink the water The final homes affected by a problem with their water supply have been given the all-clear. At one point some 15,000 properties in Ayrshire were being warned not to use their supplies after maintenance work caused a problem with taste and discoloration. That had fallen to 5,000 by Thursday morning after those living in Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Dalry were told that the problems had been resolved in their areas.
The company made alternative supplies available to those affected in north Ayrshire. Some 200 employees were mobilised to deal with the problem, along with 450,000 litres of bottled water, a fleet of tankers and around 100 static water tanks. The problem emerged on Tuesday after sediment was stirred up in pipes during maintenance work. Scottish Water's operations general manager Peter Farrer said: "We would like to apologise to all our customers who experienced discoloured water and thank them for their patience and co-operation throughout." Those affected had been warned not to use the public water supply for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, washing clothes or dishes - although it could be used to flush toilets. | See also: Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
