Police purge on speeding
Speed camera
Motorists will be urged to slow down
Scotland's eight police forces have been targeting speeding hotspots as part of a national crackdown aimed at reducing road accidents.

Traffic officers staged high-profile patrols on National No Speeding Day to tackle the problems of speeding on Scotland's roads network.

The campaign was launched by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos).

The focus has been on notorious accident spots including:

  • parts of the A8, A99 Latheron to Wick Road, A9 Ballinluig junction and Comiston Road, Buckston and Morningside in Edinburgh

  • the A82 Glasgow to Inverness trunk road, the A70 Edinburgh to Ayr Road and the A80 Glasgow to Stirling Road.

The campaign has been aimed at getting motorists to reduce their speed whenever they get behind the wheel.

Last year, there were 345 road deaths in Scotland and police chiefs are hoping to further reduce the death toll on the country's roads.

Ricky Gray, assistant chief constable of Strathclyde Police, said: "We are determined to drive this figure down, as it is estimated that almost a third of all road crashes are caused by excessive speeds.

"I hope by highlighting the problems of speeding, even if only for one day, we can make a substantial impact on road fatalities."

"We are warning drivers that despite this high-profile initiative, we will be targeting those who speed, 365 days a year."
