Biggest artwork ever for Glasgow
The Gatekeeper
The sculpture looks down on the Gorbals
The largest piece of public art ever commissioned in Glasgow has been unveiled.

The Gatekeeper is the first of a series of public artworks planned for the Gorbals area of the city.

The installation of the 20m tall work marks the completion of the massive Crown Street Regeneration Scheme.

The piece itself is not about anyone or any person

The piece was commissioned by housing developer Redrow, which financed the project under the Percent for Arts Scheme.

The Gatekeeper is located between two sandstone pillars at the entrance to the area.

A 5m by 4m photograph of a woman is encased in glass and suspended 5m above the ground by a steel frame.

Above this stands a giant bronze statue of another female figure.

Artist Matt Baker, who developed the piece with colleague Dan Dubowitz, said: "The piece itself is not about anyone or any person, but it is a place and in this place we can see two parts of the Gorbals."

We hope that this remarkable installation will enable more people to engage with the visual arts

He said that the area had become home to a large number of people who had emigrated from other countries, while retaining a real feeling of community spirit.

"The woman in the photograph represents that sort of restless spirit, but on the other hand we have got this protective guardian figure above it," he said.

The two artists, who work for their company Heisenberg, have been commissioned to create more artworks for the area's Queen Elizabeth Square.

Redrow Scotland managing director Gordon Millar said: "We hope that this remarkable installation will enable more people to engage with the visual arts.

"We also hope our experience with these projects will encourage a greater uptake of commercial interest in the Percent for Art Scheme."

Under this initiative builders use 1% of their budgets for public art projects.
