| Wednesday, 27 March, 2002, 10:17 GMT Teenage girl shot in the head ![]() A teenage girl has undergone surgery to have an airgun pellet removed from her head. Police said the 15-year-old girl was seriously injured after an airgun was fired at her. She was walking along a street in Edinburgh's Leith area on Monday night when she became aware of a sharp pain in her head. Hospital staff discovered that she has been hit by a pellet from an airgun and suffered a 0.5cm wound to the front of her head, only centimetres from her right eye.
The girl was kept in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for surgery to remove the pellet on Tuesday. Lothian and Borders Police said the girl did not see any sign of an attacker following the incident in Madeira Street, near its junction with Madiera Place. A police spokeswoman said: "The victim did not see who fired the airgun at her and we need to speak to anyone who may have seen what happened or knows who was responsible. "This appears to have been an unprovoked attack and the consequences could have been even more serious." She added: "Airguns can be very dangerous weapons particularly in the wrong hands." The spokeswoman appealed for witnesses to the attack, which took place at 2200 GMT. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
