| Saturday, 23 March, 2002, 15:31 GMT Sheridan in party funding fury ![]() Mr Sheridan said his finances have been transparent The leader of the Scottish Socialist Party has reacted furiously after doubts were raised about donations to his party. Tommy Sheridan denied a nationalist allegation that the Electoral Commission was unaware that 50% of his salary goes to his party's funds. The row erupted at the end of a week in which MSPs voted to increase their annual salary by 13.5%.
However, Scottish National Party MSP Nicola Sturgeon said she has written to the Electoral Commission asking them to investigate Mr Sheridan's affairs. This infuriated the MSP for Glasgow, who said: "My monthly donations to the SSP from my salary were discussed in full with the Electoral Commission. "They have been fully aware of this arrangement over the last three years. "Unlike the embarrassed Labour, SNP and other Tory parties, our money comes from ordinary folk. "It doesn't come from multi-millionaire cliques who fund these parties to ensure the continuation of low taxes for the rich." Political donations Mr Sheridan said his party believes that "politicians are not worth two nurses, two teachers or five hospital ancillary workers". Guidelines state that political donations of 5,000 or more made in one year must be declared to the Electoral Commission. Glasgow MSP Ms Sturgeon said: "Tommy makes a great show of giving away half his pay to his party but official records don't reflect that. "I've written to the commission so they can clear up why that isn't reflected on records." Mr Sheridan said: "I get a monthly salary before tax of 3543.14. After deductions that's 2,427.50. "Of that I donate 1,100 to the SSP. Each monthly donation comes under the 5,000 threshold so that's why there's no record of it. My finances are completely transparent." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
