| Friday, 22 March, 2002, 09:24 GMT BMA warns about doctors' conditions ![]() New guidelines "are not being met" Minimum standards for accommodating and feeding junior doctors are not being met by any Scottish NHS trust, according to the British Medical Association. An investigation by the BMA's own newspaper, BMA News, suggested that basic living conditions for some staff were failing to meet standards agreed 11 years ago. In 1991, under the New Deal for Junior Doctors, a set of guidelines was produced to make sure hours and conditions met minimum standards. But the BMA News has reported that Scotland's trusts will not be able to meet those standards by the end of the month.
An inspection team has been set up by the Scottish Executive to make sure that trusts comply with the New Deal. BMA News claims that even Scotland's newest hospital, the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at Little France, is not up to scratch. However, the Royal Infirmary's chiefs have denied this and said that the doctors' accommodation has yet to be built. The executive's inspection team is due to report back at the end of the month. Trusts will then be given six weeks to produce action plans on how they intend to improve facilities. |
