Serial sex offender heads north
Police cell door
Steven Beech was jailed in 1992 for rape
A serial sex offender who was forced to seek police protection after his neighbours discovered his crimes has arrived in Scotland.

Steven Beech, who is understood to be planning to live in Aberdeen, was met by police officers when he arrived in the city on Friday.

The 38-year-old has more than 100 convictions for offences including rape and armed robbery.

Beech, who is originally from West Bromwich, is the subject of a Sex Offenders' Order issued in England.

Grampian HQ
Beech was taken to police headquarters
He has been living in police stations for more than two weeks after being forced out of his home in Sheffield.

On his arrival in Aberdeen he was taken to the city's police headquarters while local authorities decided upon a plan of action to protect Beech and the public.

Grampian Police believes that he intends to stay in the Aberdeen area.

The force said it understood his presence may cause alarm, but stressed it had no wish to see scenes of public disorder.

Beech, who was jailed for nine years at the Old Bailey in 1992 for rape, was released in 1998.

Written consent

In October 2000 an Sex Offenders' Order against Beech was imposed by a district judge at Liverpool Magistrates Court.

The provisions of this order, which was granted indefinitely, included a ban on living with a woman without the written consent of the area's chief constable or being drunk outside any house.

He was escorted from Sheffield to Ipswich by officers from South Yorkshire Police in February after he was cleared by a court of breaching a Sex Offenders' Order.

After spending 10 days living in a prison cell Beech was transferred to Cambridgeshire last week before his move north of the border.
