| Thursday, 28 February, 2002, 06:08 GMT Prisoners given business training ![]() Re-offending rates remain stubbornly high A number of inmates at Perth prison are being given training on how to set up a business on their own. The scheme, which is the first of its kind in Scotland, is designed to combat the high levels of re-offending found among many prisoners on their release. If the scheme proves successful it could be extended to other jails across the country.
At present, inmates at some Scottish jails can learn to use specialised machinery, giving them a useful skill for life beyond the prison walls. But jobs are often in short supply for ex-cons, partly because companies do not want to employ newly released prisoners. This pilot project is designed to work around that problem, by helping offenders develop the skills they need to set up and run their own business. The scheme is being run with the help of Scottish Enterprise, which will continue to advise prisoners when they are eventually released or transferred to an open prison. |
