Fault blamed for jail fire
Kilmarnock Prison
The prison houses about 500 inmates
An electrical fault is believed to have caused a fire which led to the evacuation of Scotland's only privately-run prison.

Firefighters were called to Kilmarnock Prison, in Ayrshire, to deal with a blaze in the jail's health care wing.

Nine inmates were evacuated after staff discovered flames in the x-ray room.

Strathclyde Police said there were no reports of any injuries or escapes from the jail.

All prisoners were evacuated safely and the fire brigade were called to attend

Strathclyde Fire Brigade spokesman
A spokesman for the prison described Tuesday's fire as "small".

"We are currently investigating the cause but think it was probably due to an electrical fault," said the spokesman on Wednesday.

"The area is smoke damaged and will need to be redecorated, but we hope to have it up and running again by tonight with the patients moved back in."

Strathclyde Fire Brigade crews were called to the prison at about 2140 GMT on Tuesday.

An Scottish Prison Service (SPS) spokeswoman said: "All prisoners were evacuated safely and the fire brigade were called to attend. The fire has now been put out."

She said an investigation would be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire Brigade said: "The fire was located and contained within the health care centre and was successfully extinguished by the use of a hose reel from the fire appliance and six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus."

The 32m prison holds about 500 male inmates and was opened in March 1999.

It is run by Premier Prison Services and houses inmates and remand prisoners who are not deemed to be high risk.

There has been some unrest at the prison in its short history and staffing levels have been criticised by some politicians.
