| Friday, 15 February, 2002, 07:08 GMT New high for Scots house prices ![]() The average house costs more than �70,000 For the first time in Scotland the average house price has risen above the �70,000 mark, according to new figures. The four main cities north of the border have all shown a price rise above the national average. Edinburgh saw prices grow by 11.2% and was followed by Aberdeen at 10.5%. In Glasgow the average price has risen by 9.4%, while Dundee saw a rise of 6.7%. However economists, contributing to the Lloyds TSB Scotland House Price Monitor, have predicted that the rate of increase is unlikely to be sustained during the rest of the year.
Figures in the bank's report showed the average price of a house in Scotland has risen by 6.4% over the past year to �70,220. The average price of a house in the last quarter surveyed, between August and October last year, was �68,640. However, over the past three months the bank said the price of an average domestic property in Scotland rose by 2.3%. The figures showed that the average house price in:
Professor Donald MacRae, Lloyds TSB Scotland's chief economist, said it was expected that prices would fall in the coming months, which means prices could fall back from this record average high. "However, with the low cost of borrowing and current high levels of affordability, the housing market in Scotland will continue to remain resilient," he said. |
