Van driver survives cliff plunge

A woman motorist escaped serious injury when the van she was driving plunged 500ft, it has emerged.

Samantha McShane, 25, clambered up a ravine and flagged down a passing lorry after her car had gone over a sheer drop.

The young woman escaped with multiple bruising following the accident on the A701 near Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway.

Police said her white Volkswagen van landed on its wheels after leaving the road at a spot known as the Devil's Beeftub, five miles north of the town.

A force spokesman said: "She managed to extricate herself from the van, got herself back on to the roadway and flagged down a passing lorry driver who called police."

Details of the accident, which happened at about 2030GMT on Monday, were released by police on Tuesday.

Mrs McShane, from West Linton near Edinburgh, was said to be making a good recovery.
