| Sunday, 10 February, 2002, 11:57 GMT Prayers for Princess Margaret ![]() Flags have been placed at half mast across Scotland A private service has been held for the late Princess Margaret at the place where she was born. The Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne announced the plans for prayers and thanksgiving for the princess in the chapel at Glamis Castle. He also said that a book of condolence will be opened at the castle in Angus on Monday.
Leading political and religious figures have paid tribute to the princess and offered condolences to the Royal Family. Princess Margaret was born at Glamis in 1930, the first royal to be born in Scotland in more than 300 years. She has been fondly remembered in Scotland and was patron of a number of organisations inlcluding Scottish Ballet and the Princess Margaret Rose Hospital in Edinburgh. The Earl of Strathmore said Princess Margaret's death had been keenly felt, especially at Glamis. He said: "Her birth at Glamis Castle in August 1930 has always been a great source of pride to Glamis, and her many visits here for family occasions brought us all great joy. "The nation will mourn her loss as a leading member of the Royal Family for many years." "Glamis shares in that grief and prayers and thanksgiving will be said here in the chapel. She will be greatly missed by all my family."
