The Earl of Strathmore: "The nation will mourn"

But the registration of her birth has been the stuff of affectionate memories for those who knew the princess.

The registration at the village post office was delayed because her birth certificate number would have been 13 - regarded in superstition as unlucky.

Another birth took place in the village and her father, the Duke of York, later King George VI, was able to register her as number 14.

The Earl of Strathmore said she had brought great joy to Glamis during her many visits there.

He said: "It is with great sadness that my family and I have learned of the death of her Royal Highness Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.

"Her birth at Glamis Castle in August 1930 has always been a great source of pride to Glamis, and her many visits here for family occasions brought us all great joy.

"The nation will mourn her loss as a leading member of the Royal Family for many years."

"Glamis shares in that grief and prayers and thanksgiving will be said here in the chapel. She will be greatly missed by all my family."
