Underground closure plan scrapped
Kelvinhall station
The proposals would have saved 150,000
The operator of the Glasgow Underground has warned it is rapidly running out of money after deciding not to go ahead with cost-cutting measures.

The Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority (SPT) has abandoned plans for closures at West Street Station and the Barrhead Travel Centre, which would have saved 150,000.

The money will instead come from the authority's emergency reserves - which are now said to be running dangerously low.

SPT's performance monitoring committee recommended a number of cost-cutting measures last month.

SPT does face some difficult budgetary conditions and we will continue to hold discussions internally and with the Scottish Executive

Councillor Eric Ross
These included shutting the Barrhead Travel Centre and the partial closure of the West Street Station on the city's south side.

That move would have seen the station shutting after 1900 GMT on weekdays and all day on Sundays.

It would have been the first planned closure on the system since it was modernised more than 20 years ago.

However, a meeting of the authority on Friday voted to reject the recommendations.

Speaking afterwards chairman Councillor Eric Ross said: "Although the general public would have seen little difference to services with the cuts that were proposed, it is good that the Glasgow Underground will continue as one complete service which people can rely on to stop at all stations during operating hours."

But he added: "SPT does face some difficult budgetary conditions and we will continue to hold discussions internally and with the Scottish Executive as to how these might be dealt with for future years."
