Kelvingrove Museum has won 12.7m to go towards the 25m cost of refurbishing the Victorian building. Work will include completely rewiring the museum, refurbishing the basement storage area and suspending objects from the galleries' ceilings. The project is expected to take several years to complete. Glasgow City Council must now decide whether to close the whole museum or keep some sections open to the public while work is under way. Kelvingrove attracts more than a million visitors annually. The city council recently asked the Scottish Executive to help out with the running costs of its 13 museums, which together house the largest civic collection in the UK. The price of maintaining the properties has reached 17m a year, which has to be picked up by the council. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||
