| Friday, 25 January, 2002, 19:24 GMT Hospital resumes emergency cases ![]() The Victoria Hospital was Scotland's worst hit hospital A Glasgow hospital has reopened its doors to emergency admissions after being closed for a week. The Victoria Infirmary has been the hardest hit of the 16 Scottish hospitals struck by the winter vomiting virus. Almost 300 staff and patients have been affected by the bug, which saw the hospital being closed to admissions since last Friday. But now the team dealing with the outbreak says it is confident the bug no longer poses a serious threat to those at the hospital.
A spokesman for the South Glasgow University Hospitals NHS Trust said: "The outbreak control team thank all staff members for their contribution and help over what has been a difficult time for the hospital." More than 200 operations have been cancelled at the Victoria and the city's Southern General, which has been taking patients diverted from the hospital. Planned operations at the Southern General are also scheduled to resume on Monday. Patients and staff The airborne bug, which spreads easily from person to person, has affected a total of 16 hospitals across Scotland - and has struck in a number of areas across the UK during the winter. The virus cannot be treated, but usually lasts for less than two days. Dumfries Infirmary is the latest hospital to be struck by the bug, which has affected 44 patients and staff in three wards. Five operations have been postponed at the largest hospital in the Dumfries and Galloway region. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
