| Monday, 21 January, 2002, 11:19 GMT Virus strikes school pupils ![]() The outbreak affected more than a quarter of pupils Almost a quarter of the pupils at a Scottish primary have missed school after being struck by a viral infection. Public health officials were meeting on Monday to discuss the outbreak of viral gastroenteritis which has affected 110 children at Forthill Primary School in Dundee. The school has remained open, although Dundee City Council and the public health department of NHS Tayside say they are monitoring the situation closely.
That amounted to more than a quarter of the school roll of 467 pupils. Parents have been urged to seek medical attention for their children if they show any symptoms. News of the outbreak at the school comes in the wake of a similar vomiting virus which has closed the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow. More than 200 patients and staff have been affected by the illness. Virus outbreak That prompted Health Minister Malcolm Chisholm to announce on Sunday that every Scottish hospital would undergo a hygiene inspection. The virus outbreak is not the first health crisis the infirmary has faced in the recent days. An investigation is already under way after three patients died from salmonella poisoning. The hospital stressed that there was no link between the two infections. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
