| Saturday, 3 November, 2001, 18:22 GMT Market swoop nets 1m fakes haul ![]() Police were involved in the operation Counterfeit goods valued at more than 1m have been seized during a pre-Christmas crackdown in Glasgow. The swoop was carried out by Strathclyde Police and the Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact) at the city's Barras Market on Saturday. Seven premises in the market area were targeted in the operation. Community police officers and investigating officers from Fact recovered a range of hi-tech counterfeit goods.
No arrests were made, but a spokesperson for Strathclyde Police said that enquiries were still continuing. Fact's senior investigator for Scotland, John McGowan, hailed the operation as a success. "This was an extremely successful operation, and with the assistance of the police today we have helped de-stabilise the viability of this illegal market," he said. "People who sell these counterfeit goods run the risk of 10 years imprisonment, while the customers who buy the goods are only getting extremely poor quality material for their money." A similar raid by Strathclyde Police and Fact at the Barras earlier this year netted a 2m haul of allegedly counterfeit software. The counterfeit industry is estimated to be worth around 8bn each year in the UK alone. | See also: Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
