A British soldier training with the armed forces in Oman has died in a road accident.

The Ministry of Defence said that Corporal Kevin Collum, 29, from Burnmouth, Berwickshire, was on a training exercise in the Gulf with the Royal Logistic Corps.

The vehicle he was driving was involved in an accident on Friday.

Corporal Collum had been deployed to Oman for Exercise Saif Sareea.

He is the second British soldier to be killed in a road accident in Oman in less than two weeks.

Corporal Collum joined the Army at the age of 16 and was serving with the Royal Marines Logistic Regiment, part of the third Commando Brigade based in Barnstaple.

He leaves a wife Sharron and two children, four-year-old Ellen Louise and two-year-old James Alexander.

In a statement, his family said: "He was an ambitious and highly professional NCO (Non Commissioned Officer) and intended serving a full career in a job he loved.

"He will be sadly missed."

More than 20,000 members of the British armed forces have been involved in Operation Saif Sareea, or Swift Sword.

Training area

The largest exercise in the Gulf state in 15 years is being used to test the UK's forces' capability to deploy large numbers of troops and hardware over long distances.

On 23 October signaller Bob Grattan, 18, died after a collision involving three military vehicles in the northern training area of the Gulf state.

Four other soldiers were seriously injured in the accident.

Signaller Grattan, of Spalding, Lincolnshire, was serving with the 1st UK Armoured Division Signal Regiment at Herford in Germany.
