An investigation has been launched after adult grey seals were found dead on a beach.

Some of the seals found at South Ronaldsay, in Orkney, were heavily pregnant females who would have been ashore to give birth to their pups.

The animals were found close to where 26 seal pups were shot six years ago.

Orkney Seal Rescue said at least two of the seals have bullet wounds.

However, a local vet said the cause of death has still to be established.

Ross Flett, from Orkney Seal Rescue, said that there were people in the community who were prepared to shoot seals and would carry on until their firearms were taken away.
