Council vows prostitution crackdown

The council has vowed to crackdown on smuggling
Glasgow City Council has vowed to cut the supply of women being smuggled into Scotland from abroad to work as prostitutes.

The council says it is concerned about sex traders duping women into travelling to the city under false pretences, then forcing them to work in brothels.

Councillors have held talks with Strathclyde Police and Customs and Excise officials on how best to deal with the problem.

Jim Coleman, city council deputy leader said: "These women are bought and sold in what is the nearest thing to slavery in the 21st century.

"In Glasgow we have taken the view that we are not going to accept brothels.

"We have licensed every city sauna, knowing some are brothels because that allows us to dig into the background of who is operating them and for the police to carry out inspections."

A council spokesman added: "We are concerned that women are unfortunately being brought into the country, sometimes illegally, for sexual services and that a number of these women may be working in saunas in the city.

"Our talks at this stage are to gather information and look at ways that we as a council can help the women that are involved and try to prevent these sex businesses setting up in Glasgow."

In August, it emerged that Edinburgh's red light district was to be moved in a bid to keep prostitutes away from residential and business areas.

Residents in the Leith area of the city met police to protest at a decision to move the prostitutes to the new tolerance zone.
