| Monday, 8 October, 2001, 20:38 GMT 21:38 UK Protesters arrested after demonstration ![]() The demonstration lasted for three hours Six anti-war protesters from Faslane have been arrested after staging a demonstration in a Ministry of Defence building in Glasgow. They said the demonstration was in protest at the bombing of innocents in Afghanistan. Strathclyde Police had arrested two other protestors on the ground outside the building, in Brown Street in the city centre. The protest began about 1530 BST when the protestors climbed on to a window ledge, with police confirming that they were arrested at 1830 BST.
A police spokeswoman said: "All four have been removed from the building and arrested. "Six people in total were charged, three men and three women. They have been released from custody and a report will go to the procurator fiscal." Two of the men, aged 54 and 19, and two women, aged 20 and 29, were arrested following the incident on the window ledge. The protesters had bound themselves together with piping, the spokeswoman added. Earlier, a spokesman for the Faslane Peace Camp, defended the action. He said: "We are occupying this building in protest against the bombing of innocents in Afghanistan. "We condemn the indiscriminate killing of civilians. Bush and Blair are nothing short of murderers themselves. "If they have proof against Osama bin Laden they should bring him to trial through the international law courts." |
