Fears over 120 biscuit factory jobs
Hatton biscuit factory
There has been a plant in Hatton for over a century
Biscuit company McVities has been criticised over its plan to close an Aberdeenshire factory with the potential loss of 120 jobs.

The plant at Hatton manufactures a range of cakes and muffins.

But the firm said that the success of a range of muffins meant production must be moved because the Hatton plant is not suitable for expansion.

Alex Salmond, the local Scottish National Party MP, said any closure would have an impact on the community equivalent to the closure of the Ravenscraig steel works in Motherwell.

Alex Salmond: Impact on the community
About 700 people live in Hatton and the biscuit factory has been a major employer for more than a century.

Mr Salmond said he and local MSP Stewart Stevenson would campaign for alternative options to closure - and that they would take the fight to United Biscuits, the company which owns McVities.

A McVities spokesman said the company was open to all alternative suggestions, but stressed that the present plant is not suitable for expansion.

Production is likely to be moved to Halifax by next August, but there will be consultations about moving staff transfers.

"The closure is made more better as the reason is because of its success rather than its failure."
