Wedding plans remain on track
Kelvinhall station
Kelvinhall is one of the stations closing early
Three underground stations in Glasgow are being closed early to allow staff members to attend a wedding reception for two colleagues.

Passengers will be unable to use Kinning Park, Kelvinhall and West Street stations after 1915 BST on Friday.

Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) decided on the early closure after station masters Maureen Kelly, 33, and Manus McGhee, 43, invited colleagues to their evening wedding reception.

The move has been branded as "irresponsible by the Scottish Rail Passengers Committee who said the decision would "let customers down".

Bosses decided to ring the changes for the reception

Maureen Kelly and Manus McGhee tied the knot at Eastwood Registry Office on Friday afternoon.

But complications arose weeks before when it emerged that they had invited 30 colleagues to their reception at Celtic Football Club's Stadium.

Underground bosses decided to give invited staff the night off and took the decision to close the stations more than four hours early.

A spokesman for SPT said: "We put posters in the stations to let passengers know about it and hope this will only be a minor inconvenience for them.

'Very popular'

"We purposely explained that the closures were due to a staff wedding in the hope that our passengers will understand and see that this is a good reason for services being stopped earlier than normal."

The spokesman said he believed this was the first time SPT had taken such a decision.

He added: "Maureen and Manus are very popular members of staff and there were just so many people who wanted to share their special day."

But a spokesman for the rail passengers committee said the company was letting passengers down.

"Members of the public have paid for this public service," he said.

"Customers must come first and they are entitled to receive the services on offer.

This move is clearly wrong

Rail Passengers Committee spokesman

"We understand that this must have been a difficult situation for SPT because they would not want a situation whereby people going to the reception called in sick and left them short-staffed.

"But although we are sympathetic, this move is clearly wrong."

Maureen has worked for SPT for 10 years and husband, Manus, for 21 years. They live in the Thornliebank area of Glasgow.
