Asylum seeker death - man charged
Sighthill area
The incident happened in the Sighthill area
A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 22-year-old asylum seeker in Glasgow.

Scott Burrell, 26, from Balornock, Glasgow, made no plea or declaration at a private hearing at the city's sheriff court

He has been accused of murdering Firsat Dag, a Turkish Kurd refugee, on the morning of Sunday 5 August in the Sighthill area.

Burrell's solicitor, John Carr, did not disclose the nature of two other charges faced by his client.

However, the Crown Office later confirmed the details of three charges faced by Burrell, including the alleged murder of the asylum seeker.

A spokeswoman said the other two charges were the alleged attempted murder of a German tourist on 5 August and a separate assault earlier this year.

A second man, Martin Gould, 25, of no fixed abode, made a separate appearance charged with attempting to murder the tourist.

Gould has been charged with punching and kicking Stephane Herald, his solicitor Des McCaffrey said.

He also made no plea or declaration and both men were remanded in custody for seven days.

Mr Dag had been walking in the Sighthill area with a 16-year-old youth when he was attacked.

A police inquiry was launched against a backdrop of heightening tension over the housing of asylum seekers in Glasgow.

Mr Dag's death prompted hundreds of asylum seekers to take part in a protest march to the city council headquarters in George Square and demand action.

Further inflamed

Dozens of residents, mostly youths, then held a counter demonstration in Sighthill to highlight what they claim has been favouritism towards asylum seekers and refugees.

Just days after Mr Dag was murdered, an Iranian asylum seeker was stabbed in Glasgow.

Davoud Rasul Naseri, 22, was injured during the attack when he took out rubbish from his flat in Sighthill.

He later told journalists that he no longer felt safe in Glasgow and that he hated the city and its people.

Scottish ministers stepped into the row on Wednesday 8 August when Scotland Office Minister George Foulkes confirmed that no more asylum seekers would be sent to Sighthill in the foreseeable future.

Glasgow City Council has now appointed an official to act as mediator and address the concerns of residents and asylum seekers.
