Internet auction for golfing landmark
Starter's shed
The starter's box is being auctioned over the internet
One of the most famous landmarks in golf will be auctioned over the internet on Monday.

E-mail bids for the starter's box at the Old Course in St Andrews, the traditional home of golf, will be accepted at www.standrews.org.uk.

The closing date for bids is 10 September.

The old shed structure is being auctioned by St Andrews Links Trust to raise cash for its Junior Golf Development Programme.

The sale has been prompted by changes taking place around the first tee this winter to extend and improve the practice putting green at the Fife course.

The starter's box is being sold complete with windows, doors, the tannoy system and a sign with an official St Andrew's logo.

The Links Trust said the buyer would be responsible for the dismantling and removal of the building and associated costs by the removal deadline.

A new starter's box is being built just a few feet away from where the old one currently stands.

Dating back to the 1920s, the current building is made of brick with a slate roof designed in a traditional style.

During its time on the Old Course, the starter's box has seen off some of the most famous names in golf, from Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player to last year's winner Tiger Woods.

The Open championship venue is also popular with amateur golfers and celebrities wishing to experience the challenge of seaside links golf.

Among those who have passed through the box are former US President Bill Clinton, Clint Eastwood, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson.
