Lift-off for Highland air link

The airline will run daily flights to Amsterdam
A fast growing airline is launching two new services - one of which will link Scotland's newest city with continental Europe.

ScotAirways is moving to Inverness to establish a service to and from Amsterdam.

It will also target business customers by flying from Inverness with London City airport.

Business leaders say the new services will boost the reputation of the Highland capital as a destination for job-creating inward investment.

There will be one flight each way every day except Saturday between Inverness and London.

There will also be a daily flight to Amsterdam, Monday to Friday. The Netherlands route will not operate at the weekends.

The airline will be using a Dornier 328 turboprop aircraft which carries 31 passengers.

ScotAirways was created in October 1999 after a multi-million pound investment into Cambridge-based company Suckling Airways by Stagecoach bosses Brian Souter and Ann Gloag.

Sporting a bright red tartan tail, ScotAirways has been providing an increasing number of flights between London City Airport and Dundee and Edinburgh airports.

The company's move into the Highlands is a boost for the area, which has in the past complained that it has been hindered by the high cost of transport to and from the region.

Critics have pointed to surveys which showed that tickets on some of the less commercial routes in the region were more expensive than flying across the Atlantic.
