Medical secretaries go on strike

Medical secretaries are staging a three-day strike
Medical secretaries in Glasgow have begun three days of industrial action in a row over pay.

An overwhelming majority of the secretaries, who are members of the public sector union, Unison, voted for strike action last week after pay talks broke down.

The secretaries said they earn about 2,000 less than management secretaries but claim that their jobs carry more responsibility.

Staff at four major hospitals of the North Glasgow Hospital and Lanarkshire Acute Hospitals trusts were expected to be involved in the action.

The dispute has been simmering for some time
Unison branch secretary Carolyn Leckie said: "This is the next step in the fight for a fair deal for medical secretaries.

"We have been in discussion with the North Glasgow Trust on this regrading claim for 14 months and have had no offer.

"That is why 91.3% of our medical secretaries voted for strike action."

About 300 medical secretaries in the union were expected to join the action.

The Unison members planned to begin the industrial action with a rally in Glasgow on Wednesday afternoon.

The rally was due to be addressed by senior Unison figures and Scottish National Party MSP Dorothy Grace Elder.
