Trotter Haugh was chosen by the city council as it used to be part of the Mortonhall Estate, owned by a family called Trotter.

It also chose the word Haugh, an old Scottish word for a low-lying flood plain, as there is a stream near the row of houses which were built around two years ago.

But one resident, political researcher Peter Warren, 33, believed the street would be called Mortonhall Place because that was the working title used by the developers.

He said: "When people hear the word Trotter, they think of Del Boy or pigs.

"It is the combination of trotter and haugh which is impossible to convey across the phone apart from anything else.

'Difficult to pronounce'

"I'm sure we will be accused of snobbery but nearly all 10 of us have said that we don't like the name.

"Even taxi drivers struggle to find the place and when we moved in I saw the removal van go past three or four times because they couldn't find the place."

Local councillor Mike Pringle, who canvassed residents' views, said Glenisla Terrace "rolled off the tongue" better than the present name.

He said: "A lot of residents were not happy with the name because it was difficult to pronounce and they didn't know what it meant.

"I wrote to the residents and also did door-to-door enquiries and everyone apart from one was in favour of a name change."
