| Wednesday, 1 August, 2001, 20:34 GMT 21:34 UK Credit card swindle warning ![]() Consumers have been warned to be on their guard Trading standards officials in East Renfrewshire have issued a warning over a transatlantic credit card fraud. They say a number of people in the area have contacted them about an elaborate scheme designed to rip them off. Trading Standards Officer Steve Fox says the US-based hoaxers have somehow managed to obtain people's credit card or bank details and are deducting money from their accounts. Consumers would normally be protected under such circumstances but this fraud goes further.
Using company names such as Ultimate Freedom and Exclusive Travel, the hoaxers have been getting in touch with potential victims - phoning them or sending brochures - offering them holidays and free flights before they lift the money from their accounts. They then use the record of the contact to try and convince the victims' credit card company or bank that a transaction has taken place. Trading Standards officers say anyone who has been contacted in this way should "check and then double-check" their accounts to make sure they have not been ripped off. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
