Too many motorists are losing their concentration on the road by paying attention to something else

Mr Anderson said: "This is an extremely busy time of year on motorways and other trunk routes, when our roads network is used heavily by holiday makers, business users and commuters.

"However too many road crashes are occurring on Strathclyde's roads and some of these accidents are being caused by irresponsible driver behaviour and bad motorway manners.

"Too many motorists are losing their concentration on the road by paying attention to something else, whether it be talking on the phone or reading maps and directions which means that the driver is not in full control of the car."

Police officers will be carrying out high profile road patrols on major routes and focusing on lane discipline, tailgating and queue jumping.

The initiative will then concentrate on seat belts, speeding, drink driving and eating behind the wheel, for the rest of the week.
