| Monday, 21 May, 2001, 13:21 GMT 14:21 UK Charity to fight alcohol abuse ![]() Alcohol abuse is rising in Scotland The Salvation Army is set to launch its own campaign against alcohol abuse with a groundbreaking new addiction unit. The Christian charity will open the new project on Monday, the first of its kind in Scotland, at a time when the alcohol problem north of the border is reaching record levels. It is estimated that it costs the NHS in Scotland 180m every year to treat alcohol-related illnesses. The problem is also a factor in much of the violent crime recorded and it contributes heavily to the amount of working days lost in the economy.
The charity believes that with alcohol misuse reaching record levels in Scotland the time is now right for a new approach to the problem. It has chosen Inverclyde as the base for a new alcohol addictions unit. The area has both the highest alcohol and drug misuse rate in Scotland but the charity says it will accept clients from anywhere in the UK. What they want to see is the funding to match their commitment. Last year almost 1200 people died from alcohol-related illnesses - four times the number of those who died from drugs. Yet alcohol misuse received just 2.5m over three years compared to the 143m allocated to the fight against drugs. The Salvation Army says a balance is needed before Scotland's drink problem spirals out of control. |
