Computer manufacturer Compaq has announced plans to cut 700 jobs in Scotland.

The US-based company said it aims to reduce its workforce at its plant in Erskine, Renfrewshire through a restructuring of its business.

This would involve contracting out the manufacture of consumer and desktop personal computing products.

It said the plant would continue to manufacture made-to-order personal computers, as well as servers.

A spokesman said: "This decision would regrettably lead to a reduction in Compaq's workforce at Erskine of approximately 700 employees although Compaq remains a major employer in Scotland with more than 2,400 employees."
