Memorabilia from the Oscar-winning movie Braveheart is to be auctioned over the internet in September.

The Clan Wallace, which owns the movie props, is selling up in a bid to secure the land where William Wallace was captured by the English.

The historical site, which lies on derelict land in Robroyston, near Glasgow, has been earmarked by the local council for housing development.

But the clan hopes to secure the future of the site by raising enough cash at auction to buy the land.

Among the items being listed for sale is the handkerchief thrown to Braveheart star Mel Gibson by his on-screen wife Catherine MacCormack.

The tartan wedding banns which the screen couple exchanged in secret are also up for sale.

A number of tunics, shields and swords used by extras in the film will also be available.

A robe which was worn by Russell Crowe in the opening sequences of the film Gladiator is another lot being auctioned.

Clan spokesman Seorus Wallace said members would rather not part with the movie props which they have collected over the years.

Permanent memorial

He said that some of the memorabilia had been presented to the clan by the Braveheart producers.

But he said it was more important to preserve the historical site in Scotland where William Wallace was captured by the English.

If the clan is successful in its attempt to raise cash and purchase the land, it plans to establish a permanent memorial to their famous ancestor.

Clan members remain confident that an internet auction will attract international attention and generate a significant amount of cash.

They point to an auction earlier this month when the five-foot sword used by Mel Gibson in Braveheart was sold for $170,000 (116,000).

That charity auction was organised by Rob Roy actor, Liam Neeson in aid of Unicef.
