Some of Scotland's footballing heroes have helped launch a new scheme designed to tackle racist attitudes among young fans.

The charity Show Racism the Red Card enlisted the help of national team manager Craig Brown, Hearts boss Craig Levein and Dundee United captain Jason de Vos in an effort to challenge the way some teenagers feel about people from ethnic minorities.

The campaign kicked-off at the Scottish Parliament with the launch of a video showing some of the top names in world football speaking out against racism in the game.

Craig Levein: Racism will not be tolerated
The event was organised by a cross-party group of MSPs led by independent MSP Dennis Canavan.

He said: "The Scottish Parliament has a duty to promote a modern inclusive society in which people of different ethnic origins live together in peace and harmony.

"I hope that the video will help to get across a strong message that racism in any form will not be tolerated on the field of sport or anywhere else."

Ged Grebby from Show Racism the Red Card said: "The video features some of the greatest players and managers in the world speaking out against racism, and the aim of our campaign is to harness the high profile of professional football to fight racism.

"Martin O'Neill, Henrik Larsson, Craig Brown, Andy Cole and Kevin Gallacher are just some of the big names on the video."

Craig Brown was scheduled to attend the event, alongside other members of the national team squad.

Stars quizzed

Craig Levein appeared along with players from Edinburgh rivals Hibernian.

School pupils who were at the launch got the opportunity to question the footballers about the problems of racism in the sport.

The video will be accompanied with a CD ROM which will be used for educational purposes by schools, youth clubs, the police and trade unions.
