| Tuesday, 13 February, 2001, 11:39 GMT Web firm helps breast cancer sufferers ![]() The company has had orders from around the world A Glasgow company is helping women around the world who have had mastectomies as a result of breast cancer. The firm, Abra4u.com, supplies women with lingerie and swimwear which meets their post-surgery requirements and which can be used with prosthesis. The recently launched site has already recorded thousands of hits and has proved to be particularly popular with women in the Far East. Owner Anne Moore said the idea came to her after hearing of women encountering difficulty in obtaining suitable bras.
Abra4u.com aims to help those who experience difficulty in finding the correct type of bra and support - bras of many different sizes, styles and colours are offered. One woman, Jean, who has used the company's service told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland: "I think I would have been embarrassed to have gone to a normal shop. "Also knowing that the person who runs this shop has had a mastectomy, she'll be able to understand my feelings very well." Ms Moore was spurred into action after hearing about the difficulties her friend Joan - who now works in the shop - had after a mastectomy. Ms Moore said: "When Jean discovered she had breast cancer - and following her treatment - all that was on offer to her was mail order. 'Whole again' "So I though if you are having this problem, there must be other women having the same problem." Jean believes the venture is important because it has restored her confidence and "made her feel whole again. It will give me my confidence back." The site has received inquiries from around the world, but it has been very popular with women in the Far East. One woman in South Korea made contact with the company after trying to create her own prosthesis using a bag of rice - professionally manufactured prosthesis use silicone. The firm donates 1% of its profits towards cancer treatment to local hospitals. |
