Firefighter title 'too aggressive'
Firemen
There are legal implications in changing the name
Fire service chiefs in Scotland are considering ditching the title "firefighter" because it is seen as too aggressive.

The suggestion has come from the Scottish Fire Service Fairness and Diversity Forum, a group set up to tackle sexism in the service.

It also suggests that in the interests of political correctness the name "firemaster" - used for the head of the Scottish fire brigade - also be scrapped because it is "derogatory to women".

By using the term firemaster the inference is we will never have a woman heading the brigade in Scotland

Roddy Robertson, FBU Scotland
The group, established to promote equal opportunities, is made up of senior civil servants, councillors and union leaders.

A change to the title of firemaster would require an amendment of the Fire Services Act of 1947, which forms the legal framework in which Scottish fire brigades operate.

On Saturday a spokesman for the Scottish Executive confirmed plans to change the titles were being considered.

Matter 'being considered'

He said: "The fire inspectorate are looking at the legal implications of changing the name.

"It would require legislation and a change of the Fire Services Act. We will consider the issue when they report back to us."

The move to scrap the term firemaster has been backed by the Fire Brigade Union Scotland.

Roddy Robertson, the union's regional organiser, said: "By using the term firemaster the inference is we will never have a woman heading the brigade in Scotland.

"It is a cosmetic change, a small concession, but it sends out the right signals to women who are considering joining the force."
