News of the wedding of Madonna and Guy Ritchie has sparked a mini boom in the normally quiet Highland town of Dornoch.

Rumours that the couple were to tie the knot in the area have meant that all the hotel rooms for miles around have been snapped up by the media.

The publication of wedding banns means that the couple can wed from 22 December.

Highland Tourist Board has been reporting that the only rooms available on that date are in the village of Tain, eight miles away.

Some hotels which normally close over the winter are opening especially amid the interest generated by the wedding.

Tourist board assistant area manager Elaine Wilson said: "Since the mini boom so far has been created by the press who have taken up the rooms in hotels we will probably get a slump before the actual wedding but hopefully it will build up again.

"There has not been any definite inquiries from the public to come up to the area as a result of the wedding yet but now that has been confirmed that may change.

"The interest has been great advertising for Dornoch which is normally quite quiet at this time of year and this has put Dornoch on the map."

Paul Hart, owner of the Eagle Hotel in Dornoch, said all his rooms were fully booked.

He said: "Dornoch has many attractions and this wedding has created great publicity for the town."
