The Liberal Democrats have taken five seats on Bristol City Council, overtaking Labour as the biggest party. Their total number of seats has increased from 27 to 32, but the authority remains hung.
Labour are down four from 31 to 27, losing control of Ashley, Easton, Eastville and Lockleaze wards, to the Lib Dems.
Of the 70 seats, 23 were contested. The balance of power is now Lib Dems 32, Labour 27 and Conservative 11.
'Alternative proposals'
Liberal Democrat leader Barbra Janke said she welcomed the result and was "confident" the party could now lead the council.
"I believe the Liberal Democrats can form an administration and take the city council forward.
"If Labour and the Conservatives want to obstruct this then they'll have to put forward alternative proposals.
"My belief is that we will get support. We are the largest group and we'll lead the city," she said.
The Liberal Democrats took the Cabot ward from the independant Roy Tallis.
